These are two designs that I really like, and since I need a character ortho for my Character Modeling class, I worked one of these out.
I don't know how much we're supposed to put into what the zombies might do, but I gave it some thought.
With my first zombie, I went with Civil War soldier, who has a cannonball permanently lodged in his face. He's also got a crutch, which he's affixed his lost foot on. Hey, what better way to keep track of it? So anywho, I figured this fella lumbers at you, swinging his sword, and if you kill him you have a few seconds to step back before the cannonball goes off.
For my next zombie I'm going for a revolutionary era Judge. He's an older fella, and he shuffles along too, but he has one advantage. He's got the Ear Trumpet of JUSTICE!!!! He needs it... afterall, he doesn't have that good a hearing without it. But with it, he becomes an annoying enemy with super hearing. Getting around this guy won't be easy. And if he gets within range, he'll crack your hand with the GAVEL OF ULTIMATE JUDGEMENT!

I'm really enjoying the judge, mostly I just really like coattails and powdered wigs - not just because I'm wearing them right now either. I wouldn't want to make the zombies too specific as far as form - individual touches like the cannonball to the face - simply because when they horde together, repeating zombies might stick out too much. You shouldn't completely discount the idea yet though.

Aaah, yeah. Hadn't thought about that. May be too distinctive to put in hordes. So do you think the judge zombie is a bit too distinctive as well?

These are some great ideas!
I'm going to agree with Doug's statement that the cannonball-in-the-face zombie is a fantastic concept, but we're looking for the unwashed masses here so is a bit too distinctive. However, doing a civil war zombie is right in line with what we're looking for - we just need to make sure that their injuries are such that we can present a horde of them and not have things look too obviously repetitive.
I love the judge, and I don't think he's too distinctive. Plenty of muckety-mucks wore powder wigs and tails back then - judges, congressmen, bankers, anyone who wanted to look rich and important. So I say go for it!

awesome leg/crutch concept for the civil war guy. Hope that stays in your revised concept!

Having the zombie as a judge specifically may be a little distinct, but his general design might be good for a zombie in high government power. You can even make a variation and replace his powdered wig with a top hat or bowler cap. good handle on style and proportion though

Like my zombie, this thread is back from the dead!!
I'm sure my art style probably doesn't mesh with the idea for the game, but I figure I can tweak itto get it to match later.
Rough textures and started smoothing.

i love his head! it is awesome! But, his body somewhat is off the point. I assumed it is just sketch on rest of body part?

Absolutely. The other parts of his body that don't look good were just there to flesh out UV's where lights should be, etc.

cool! looking forward to see it. Be careful how you design the shirt. :-) I know it just a sketch. :-p

SHIRT!
I know it's not dirty or grungy enough, but I plan to get the base down and go back and grunge it up.

'Nother progress shot.
He's pretty vibrant and clean right now, but I want to get the base colors, et all done, then I'll grunge him up, etc.

sweet! but watch on shirt like i said before. The shirt should be shaped with 'V" at near hip area. Right now, your shirt is straight and doesnt really make sense. Most old fashioned shirt/coat dont make that.
otherwise, I dig it! :-)

omg that coat texture is looking so awesome...

That's hot. Tons of detail and awesome painting job. Mind posting the texture flats?
The back of the coat is looking too busy though...some of the folds don't make a lot of sense in terms of form. Maybe simplify them more so the form shows through clearly?
While this is a polished and tight texture, it doesn't really match the art style. you want simple, rougher strokes, and more noise in the texture. Try overlaying some clouds, and using a material like plaster to get that busier small surface detail going...

Well, I added the clouds layer, desaturated, added muck, some flesh on his hands, etc. Still not sure if it matches the art style, but with other finals to work on, this may be as far as it gets. And despite whether it wins or not, it's still a piece I'm proud of and was happy to be goaded into doing.

This is the 512x512 version.
only thing I would add to take this into the realm of the other pieces is dark black lines that define the important edges, especially on the legs and feet...
nice work.

This is a great piece - nice work!
I agree with Dabu - if you get a chance to put in the dark stroke outlines that would really lock it in to the style. For and example of the dark stroke that I'm talking about check out the style guide, especially the cowboy model there from one of our artists. You could also see Vic's thread - we gave him the same note so you can see a model before and after the dark strokes were added.

I tossed in some final black outlines, but without the toon shader they don't look quite as awesomea s I'd hoped. Sadly maya's toon outliner doesn't like me much.
