Selecting Border Edges

So, I've been working on my manhole for Dabu's class and I'm wondering if there's an easier way to do this. I'm trying to select the border edges of my geometry to bevel. However when I use the select edge loop tool, it doesn't select the whole border. I've also tried using the border edge tool, and no success...

after maya 2009 you can double click to select border edges. although reason it stops is becasue it cant tell where to continue the loop so here are some tips. one click the starting edge and then double click the edge where you want the loop to end it will select all in between edges. second sometimes it wont do the whole loop so just double click the first edge see where it stops and then double click the next edge in the set until you close your loop. but sometimes maya just does not know where to start and stop the loop. Thats it.
