Anyone know what's going on with H264? For the last I don't know how many years it's been pretty junkie compared to when I used to use it (4 years ago). I just tried exporting in H264 after a while and the color degradation + weird change in brightness/levels + resolution quality is horrendous.

Clearly it wouldn't look like something uncompressed, but I remember it being a lot better, and over the years have forgotten to ask, till now.

I enjoy using FLVs but, as an example, would like to incorporate a Quicktime version of my reel. Not a fan of mpeg4 anyway.

from what i gather and have experienced h264 was really best used for anime type stuff where there is a lot more flat areas of color. This problem came up a lot in my portfolio class, and my matte painting class. Im not sure what format i would use i don' t encode a lot of videos these days. depending on what tool your using of course to compress you will have more options etc. I really like regular Xvid mpeg4. It could just be you need to modify your settings to produce higher quality compression, or you need to use standalone app to convert from an uncompressed format. I assume your using aftereffects or something. It could just be that AE support for h264 is crappy in this version.

nah I've always tried several methods/settings, but the usual start point is an uncompressed .mov

i'll try Xvid, never gave that a shot, thanks
