so ive had to refer people to an old post i made that resolves the flickering issue in maya when using an 8800 gtx and, one recommended i just make it its own thread because it so hard to find where it was buried. so for any of you who have the flickering veiwport problem here is how to fix it.

First of all often its the "use threaded optimization" option in the graphics drivers. It may be nvidia specific. Setting that to off, often solves the problem. But i came across this maya env variable.
MAYA_GEFORCE_SKIP_OVERLAY=1
add to you maya.env in your documents/maya/(version#) folder. Pretty sure this is also nvidia specific but its an issue i had on xp ever since i got an 8 series card and this is the first fix i found that worked all the time. i can use maya properly again without having to hit space to redraw the screen every 2 minutes.

Cool, thanks. I hate that problem with a passion!!!

One day I will have a nice workstation card, but until then...

well i also cover why not to get a workstation card in the original thread. Ill keep it short and just say its the same card as the equivielnt consumer level card. Only thing that workstation cards add are official support from autodesk and from nvidia, dont be fooled. the hardware in both cards is identical, the only difference is price and drivers, bundled with support (useless support at that). So save your bucks for other stuff, a good consumer level card will be all you ever need. if you want to know more just look in the old thread here

hope you read it and save that money for something worth while, dont be a victim of this corporate scam.

Well now, I always wondered how they could be so different when a workstation card is supposedly more powerful than a consumer card but runs gaming software in the most craptastic way possible (yes - craptastic is a word in my world)

Thanks for the information

I'm getting a little flickering, in maya, and even some games... I'm running opn a pair of crossfired ATI Radeon 4770s. I've got nice AA in the view port though.

well flickering is not quite what it sounds, its like this odd bug in maya where the viewport constantly resets to a defualt position no matter how many times you try to move it. Basically means you cant do shit at all. A flicker like you describe though is more of a draw error, you may try enabling vsync which can cut down on this type of flickr, also called tearing. And yeah having nice AA in the viewport is sweet.
