hey, I can't seem to find the folder that contains the maya shelf icons. Does anyone know where to find it, with your typical installation?

C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Maya2009\icons they are here but they are the format .xpm so prob cant be viewed without some sort of viewer or plugin.
Also this is the same location that all of the hypershade icons are in as well.
if you install a plug-in sometimes it will also put them into your my documents\maya\mayaversion\icons folder but there is not many things that use that.

here is a wiki about the xpm format. it seems its an ascii type image format.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X_PixMap

and here is a plug-in for photoshop so you can import and export .xpm

Well, I don't really need to view the icons, I just want to change some icons on my shelf from the default MEL one to some other already existing icons. My C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Maya2008\icons folder doesn't contain any .xpm files however, just some FTI and TDI files and when I try changing the image in the shelf editor it doesn't recognize them as valid file formats!?

thats weird i have about 2k files in that folder, and there is a xpm with a name matching a shelf command for every shelf command. thats odd but keep looking. they are there somewhere but it could be the case that 2009 is slightly different for some reason. and after cheking my 8.5 installation it contains no xpm, so the fti or the tdi is probably the image format for your version.
a google search of he format should reveal some info on that.

as a side not the tdi format will open in maya fcheck then you can save the image into another format from there if you wanted to edit it or you could possibly open an image in fcheck and then save it as a tdi.
hope that helps.

Well what's also strange is that when looking at the shelf editor, the icons of the buttons Do refer to xpm files, but there is no path given.
