1st Place - Abra Cadaver Purred Corpse Rifle

2nd - Toaster Rifle

3rd - The Decoy

Feedback from Pryce:

1. Corpse rifle. Its ridiculous and well executed. I like the foot sticking out- its instantly capivating. Well executed and clear. That's the way I roll when I evaluate commercial art.

2. Toaster gun. This comes second for me because at a glance, I can't tell what it is. I think it would have been better if it looked more like a toaster and if the actual toast in the main images was better executed. Also the funny extras like the butter and the jam aren't legible enough. But, I like the concept and its funny. Plus the extra work put into it with the characters is pretty cool.

3. Multi Blade. Kind of a toss-up, but its a pretty ridiculous weapon.

Ii the emphasis was more on art than on concept, then maybe I'd go with the frost rifle instead. It looks good and is pretty well presented though there was some weird choices in not appropriately rendering the end of the barrel. However, its not very funny and it just looks like a steam punk rifle.

Feedback From Shon:

1st place : The handheld reactor. Best in overall artistic implementation. The design matches his original goal to create gun in the vein of unreal, and it matches that visual style. Also design wise it has the most functionality of a usable weapon while still being completely impractical as it can hurt and kill its user easily, while still being able to cause damage to enemies.

2nd Place : Steam Powered Cleavers. Harmful to enemies but unnecessarily so. About the same amount of damage could be inflicted sans steam power so the back pack slows down the user rather than giving them any help.

3rd : Cadaver gun. Weapon is useless as meat sillie string wont hurt you unless maybe its bad meat and you catch an unlucky load in your mouth. 3rd place on art style alone.

And from Dabu:

1st place was a toss up for me between the Toaster Rifle and the Corpse Rifle. I ultimately went with the corpse rifle after talking with Pryce. Its goofy, very striking (if not a little confusing) silhouette. Good mix of style and design.

2nd - Toaster Rifle. Funny idea, artistically could be a little stronger in places. However, the mockups with the characters really took this one over the top for me.

3rd - The Decoy, as it demonstrated the highest level of craft, and looks great, though it does look like just another unreal weapon to me at a casual glance. The design of this could really be pushed further, would like to see this level of detail applied to something more visually interesting / pushed further from a typical unreal weapon.

Loved the idea of the Icicle gun, but it wasn't finished, and the function could have been more inherent in the design. Nobody will ever see that little window from in game camera.

The Steam Butcherknife was interesting in concept, but was hard to make out the function from the art, and the presentation was weak.

The Omni Blade was a really strong contender, would have liked to see it without cellshading. Unfortunately, you can only win once.

Congrats doug, I knew yours was the best from the start. Well deserved.

Everyone else, great job, honestly. This was a lot of fun and I can't wait for the next contest. Until then I'm going to do everything I can to get better so you all better watch out :) I didnt even know we could submit more than one design in the contest. I read all the rules and I was under the impression we couldnt unless stated. Shoot I had a bunch of cool ideas, oh well now I know for the next contest!

Since I moved out here to Los Angeles Saturday, I'd like to give the second place prize to the third place winner.

Take care all!

Oh yeah, and I want to thank Dabu, Shon, and Pryce for setting this all up and judging. Much appreciated.

I am humbled by this turn of events. Yet, at the same time, this totally inflates my ego. Thanks to all the judges and this awesome forum for the opportunities it gives me and everyone who participated. I hope next contest we can get even more people in on it.

Thanks James for the kind words, I seriously was afraid of that toast rifle - not just as competition (toast hurts). I though your presentation was really neat and your textures were pretty well done.

I also realized the other day the total irony of the steam powered freeze gun. How the hell do you make ice with steam?

Anyway, sorry if I seem like a jerk for not even checking the forums recently, I just returned from my trip to Disneyland. And sorry, I didn't bring you guys back anything.

Were you going to mail this thing to me, or should I pick it up sometime? My schedule's not exactly taxing at the moment, but I don't know when I'll be going to the city any time soon.

also, ninjas are way cooler. Pirates are just a bunch of alcoholics.

I think ninjas just do opium.

maybe hashish

When people look back and think about ninjas, they see some sort of crazy magical spider-man in black pajamas who was impervious to any sort of harm. Surely a being like this never existed. It was probably some nerd who dressed up in black pajamas and spent all day jumping off his moms roof.

When people look back at Pirates, they think of drunk sailors full of myth and lore who sailed the seas taking from the oppressive rich to feed their alcoholic greed. In most cases, this was an actuality.

So Pirates whin for the simple fact that they actually existed.

You two want to get into a pissing contest? Well now you have it. Doug you model a Ninja, James you model a Pirate. You wanna settle this pirates vs ninjas thing out, then do it right! Not with any of that bs logic and useless debate! Do it with 3d models. You can be Gamestepper's first Artist Showdown. Afterall everyone loves a good fight, and either ninjas or pirates.

FIGHT!!!

First of all, ninjas so exist. And even if they didn't that's no metric. I would in fact argue that pirates don't officially exist. Ninjas need to be inducted into an official society and learn ninjitsu. The distinction between normal people and ninjais very clear. Meanwhile, the line between pirate and a bunch of agressively oversexed drunk white dipshits hanging around on a boat it a blurry one at best.

Pirates were a bunch of mindless brutes who only won any battle by numbers and the sissiness of their dandy townfolk opponents. Ninjas are silent intelectuals who train their whole lives to stealthly kill even the most trained dandy from the shadows. There has never been a great cartoon show about pirates (Pirates of Dark Water does not constitute great), nor a cool game, unless you count Sid Meyer's pirates, which I know you don't.

As for a contest, an intriguing proposal... perhaps in the near future.
