So I was looking for a cheap and easy way to get a portfolio site going and I have ZERO knowledge on how to make a website.

My roommate showed me this site, www.squarespace.com where you can build a site with a dynamic realtime preview, templates, tweaks, widgets, in depth customization, drag and drop elements, lightboxes, everything you need to make a nice looking portfolio site quick and easy without coding at all. (aside from maybe colour hex codes if you use them)

On top of that, for those of you who are saavy with websites, it allows for custom css and html as well. It can be used to build a whole site, or just lay out your foundation for you to customize it beyond original recognition.

They have a 14-day trial if you guys want to try it out, thats what I'm doing but now I think I'm going to buy space there. I already have a parked domain I'm gonna use so I just need to puchase it. I made mine (www.jamesdemonaco.squarespace.com) in like 15 minutes with stuff I already had on my computer by altering things from a template to make it my own. Its pretty nice!

Just thought I would post it here because no doubt there are some of you just looking for a quick fix on a site and probably some of you arent website saavy like me. :)

Other peoples pixels (http://www.otherpeoplespixels.com) is also another great place to grab a portfolio site, easy to setup, they'll buy or use a URL that you want and its really customizeable but super usable right out of the box. Its fairly cheap, 16 bucks a month which isn't bad. Its got HTML customization as well as just some nice templates that are really customizable, its great for people who know nothing about HTML/CSS/Webcoding. Tell them you are from AICA-SF if you end up doing business with them.

Would you guys pay 5$ per month to host a professional portfolio on Gamestepper?

What sort of limitations would be put on it would be my first question?

I'm paying about $7 through bluehost.

There's some cheap domains that can be purchased at a place called joker.com

hmmm, well, Im thinking you would get around 250 megs possibly more for hosting content.

and you would get a sure slick and easy to use interface for updating your content.

basically, a unique space all to yourself, hosted through this site, with little to no other branding besides maybe a little gamestepper logo in the bottom corner...

Seems like 250megs is a pretty small amount of hosting space.

well, it depends on what you're hosting. images for a portfolio won't take up much room, a reel is maybe 50 megs on the top end...

Now if you want to store FILES, thats something else, and of course we are planning for that as well...

I simply note that because my current host provides, within reason, unlimited storage. That said I understand there's alot more to involved with what you'd like to create than just file hosting.

cool, I appreciate the feedback. In fact, as we start to flesh this out, I would enjoy getting your impressions on the services we will offer, and the pricing points for said services...

I would be very interested. My web design skills are close to non existant and I need to patch together a portfolio soon. Just linking to my blog looks so unprofessional, especially because I update the damn thing once in a blue moon.

wix.com is another site that has free templates and is easy to operate. The editor works in-browser and then spits out embedding code. I use it with my own domain ( www.EricSeay.com ). DeviantArt is a good place to show off work for free, but there's a lot of other work to compete with for attention.
