Hey. Does anyone know how to fix corrupt files? Maya tries to load my file, then stops and just freezes. If anyone knows please let me know.

yeah that's not going to be fixable, always save incrementally so you can fallback without losing too much work. However when maya saves durring a crash it is possible to load that file. go to your
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temp
directory

now yours may differ slightly depending on your user name mine is administrator.

also you will not be able to see the local settings folder if you have not enabled "show hidden files and folders" this can be activated by opening my computer and going to
tools - folder options - view tab then scroll down until you see the show hidden files and folder checkbox and check it on.

in the temp folder you will find maya files saved out with the date they where created. load the one from the day the file crashed and hopefully it works.

What where you doing when it crashed and went corrupt btw. this always happens to me when i am beveling edges i dont know why but its a big pain in the ass maya issue.

I saved my file on one of the school computers, took it home, and now it doesn't work. I'm here at school right now and tried loading up on the comps here, and it still doesn't work.

unfortunately this is pretty common best practice to prevent it is to save incrementally so your not working off the same file. Every time you save make a new file, also delete history frequently, all those actions your perform when modeling get stored away in the maya file and are usually the cause of an error. If you cleanup your outliner as well to get rid of stuff thats not actually in the scene you will have less chances of getting an error. While a lot of teachers will suggest you use a MA file since it can be recovered i tend to disagree because i've never meet any one who can recover one of these files that has gone corrupt. So i usually use a MB file and tend to have much better luck with files not going corrupt. It used to be the case that you could use MA so you could edit it to be opened in older versions of maya but that is now useless because maya has an option to ignore version when your opening files without the need for any editing.
sry to say but your file is lost. best to spend your time recouping your losses, rather than trying to recover that thing.

Depend on what kind of error MAYA says.

I say one thing.
Open MAYA and push 4 for tuen to wireframe mode.
then drag and drop OR import the file.

the reason why it crash is because the school machiene doesnt have enough power to load it.
if u always load the file under mesh or texture mode( i mean push 5 or 6), it might crash.
it might be ok under wireframe mode. just try.

or u can ask somebody who has good PC, u know school LAB PC is crap.

yeah ill have to agree with that sometimes you get crashes when loading into texture and shaded mode so often you either need to switch to wire frame and sometimes i even need to close the hyper shade because the swatches are crashing it. But if you where working on it at school when you saved then it wont open on the same computer then its gone. But that can be super annoying when the computer cant load your scene i had that problem this semester i had a scene that could not even run on the computers at school, they usually dont have good graphics cards for some reason, they have good cpus and lots of ram but the school skimps on graphics cards, guess they forget game students need real-time display.

We should start a petition for game major specific hardware since they are raising our tuition again anyways.

well, i agree. but u know, school PC has NVIDIA QUADRO which is hyper strong graphic card in the world. one graphic card price is around $1500-3500. School PC has good CPU, good graphic card, 3G mem,,,,,,I kinda know school PCs problem, is because, school PC is controlled by network server always, and the network system is really s*ck. thats makes school LAB PC slow. I think it has one reason that we can use network rendering in MAYA. but. problem is nobody use network rendering when they render cuz all PC is full always.
Even my PC is faster than any school PC, mine just has Core2 Quad, 8 G RAM (3.25for system, 4.75 for ramdisk, Ge Force8800GTX)

well... Im not sure what the lab computers are like at Ai, but they may be even less powerful than the ones at AAU.

dont let the term Quadro fool you its just branding its the same cards as the consumer models. and the ones at the academy are not even equal to 8800 gtx which i run at home. and my card is about 2.5 years old now there is much faster much cheaper cards available. The school just likes to waste its damn money on the Quadro cards because they dont know any better, and also because software devs wont give support for consumer level cards only professional level. Maybe if the school would let me choose what parts to buy they would save thousands and thousands of dollars and have far better equipments but i dont have much hope of that happening any time soon. But the cards we run at school are about equal too a nvidia geforce 6800, and some are like 7900's both of which are good but way out of date. i run a i7 2.66 ghz OC to 4ghz, 6 gigs ddr3 ram 8800 gtx with 768 mb texture mem, and two TB hardrive, and i built it for under 1100 dollars with a power supply. And i could honestly build it cheaper if had not bought my graphics card when it was new a few years ago. Im pretty sure the academy leases those computers anyways so they can upgrade for cheaper later down the line but they should really consider just building their own pcs rather than getting ripped off by dell. Of course they will probably say that they do it for the warranty which is pretty stupid too because all of the components in my pc have a minimum of a 3 year warranty anyways, which is the longest dell offers in the first place, and a few parts like my graphics card and my memory have lifetime warranties. I'm going to take a guess and say that the better computers at our school cost the school upwards of 4000 dollars each, and the same computer could have been built much cheaper, they probably just get a discount for buying so many and since its a lease its on payment plan, i just feel like my tuition money could be better spent, maybe on computers that are even close to equal to what i run at home. Or if they are not going to do that than i should not have to pay a lab fee for a computer that wont even run the scene i did for my environments class. but hey I'm just student what would i know.

This happens if you acidently save the maya file or open it in 2009 but it's a 2008
you might want to try to open 2009 then dragging the and dropping the file in the open maya. If this doesn't work you can use the import. I have had this happen a couple of times that's when I stopped working on the lab computers and got my own maya.
