So this is an early concept for the Toaster Launcher and its jelly/butter napalm pack.
this I like, do me a concept of someone wearing it, so we can see scale...

no problem, I'll work on that tonight

alright so heres a quick sketch for proportions
sorry for my lack of drawing skills haha

YOUR TOAST HAS BEEN BURNED, AND NO AMOUNT OF SCRAPING WILL REMOVE THE BLACK PART!
cool dude, would be interesting to have some jerry-rigged heat meter that gauges how many times you can fire, until the toaster gets too hot. upon that last firing, it would have to cool down (addition of some cooling vent that flares open from the each side)
James

I like the ideas of a meter and the vents, thats a pretty cool touch that I'll probably add later on if I take it into z-brush and then finally texture it.
I also think I'm going to make a little lever in the back for dropping the toast in, like a real toaster, only on the gun it acts as the hammer, err well really it acts as a forestock only from the rear. It loads the toast is what I'm trying to say haha.

Okay so here's some update orthographics
I'm going to start working on colour bars now :D
James
05-22-2009, 03:52 AM
okay so I've decided to scrap the colour bars and just place textures I like in place to save time since I'd really like to start modeling this.
Here are the colours I'm thinking of, gonna go with a fallout 3 sort of feel
Like an old 50's toaster :D

yeah that will be cool, i was thinking fallout 3 when i saw this concept, that game has lots of these crazy type weapons. A 50's toaster would prob be a bit smaller, and rounder, and possibly either white or beige, with a chance of chrome. It would have big round nobs. And of course if its fallout 3 style then has to be super worn out, but highly realistic. Ive done a few mods for FLT3 and this would not be that hard to bring into the game once it was done, it would definitely get a lot of downloads. Budget wise you may be better off combining the two tanks into one tank where the ingredients are swirled together like toothpaste, or are just split down the center of the tank like epoxy or something.
James

thanks for the suggestions mate. I've been looking at toasters all night and I'm starting to go crazy haha.
So I started out the modeling, made the toaster a little bit smaller actually and rounded it out. So far my budget is pretty good. I'm at 2928 Tris and I've already got most of it blocked out. All thats left is refining, adding detail, then unwrapping and getting ready to take it into z-brush.
James
05-22-2009, 09:42 AM
So I added some knobs and a little display as well as some tape to hold the tubing on the side. There are also some new internal parts to make it seem "believable".
Oh, AND TOAST! haha
I'm at 3310 Tris now so I'm almost there :D
I dunno about those tanks, I was thinking you could go for something that looks more appropriate in terms of appearance. Those look like they hold gas, not viscous liquids like jam an butter. And they are extremely large. I would rethink those before going any further.
Also, why does it have to strap to your back? Having to heft it around would be far less practical...
James
05-22-2009, 04:00 PM
I'm glad you're "questioning the practicality" of my model :P
That means I'm doing it right haha
I was thinking about scrapping the whole butter/jam dispenser idea and using the extra geo to make the toaster rifle that much better.
Idk though. I guess its not practical but isnt that the point? haha
James
05-23-2009, 10:02 AM
So I think I'm going to scrap the tanks and that thing all together.
With the extra polys I could do a lot with the gun, including make a third barrel, the butter barrel :D
what do you think?
James
05-23-2009, 01:40 PM
Okay I totally read your post wrong at first dabu, haha. So sorry about that... i've decided to scrap the tanks for butter sprayers in the front of the gun that spray the toast on its way out. Also, the butter can be reloaded via liquid butter capsules that plug in the back of the toaster. Extra capsules can be carried on a new strap that keeps the gun by your side, not unlike an MP5 strap.
Inspiration for the butter capsules came from those little all purpose C02 capsules, I modeled it and I think it looks pretty bad ass, I'll update later after I put some more work into it. Also working on a belt with bread holsters :D
James
05-23-2009, 02:56 PM
got the little canisters in and the sprayers. Gonna work on the strap now as well as some other things to add to the weapon.
Oh yeah, and I added a scope for long range toast launching
James

Waiting for my Ambient Occlusion to bake out before texturing.
Here's a couple shots of the pre-bake renders :D
optimize that handle geo, its not a contest of qustionable optimization :)
James
05-23-2009, 10:22 PM
The trigger handle? I can do that
Oh, and don't go thinking that was funny :P
I would also scale up the easy carry handle on the top, really beef it out.
James
05-24-2009, 05:23 AM
K I scaled up the handle, fixed the geo on the handle, and got all the base textures done.
Now I'm going to take it into zbrush and start working on a normal map for it.
heres a few shots :D
James
05-25-2009, 01:28 PM
did some optimization and a few changes based on feedback I recieved outside of the forums.
I think it looks better now, I'm at 3498 tris, should I add two more just cause? haha I'm kidding, that would be pointless.
So I dont know that my zbrush skills are good enough yet to work on this project so I dont think I'll bump it, I tried and failed, sigh. I've just gotta get better.
Did you drop the tanks altogether? It stands on its own without them. Is that little vial for butter?
James
05-25-2009, 08:41 PM
Yeah I dropped the tanks all together, I agree... I think the weapon really stands on its own as well.
Yeah that vile is for the butter :D liquid butter that is!
how bout a second one for jam? You could rig it so a jam jar screws right in. On that note, you could make it a square opening for a block of butter to fit in on the other side.
James
05-26-2009, 06:07 PM
So I could optimize more I suppose to get more poly/texture to work with. The only thing is, I dont know how good jam would spray out of that front nozzle. Originally I did play with the idea of the butter block too, I just dont know about showing how it melts and stuff you know? The idea was that it sprays the butter as the toast shoots out the barrels and if I just had a stick of butter thrown in I dont know if that would convey it melting and stuff, thats why I opted for the clear vile of liquid butter.
I'm going to ponder this and see if I can come up something that incorporates jelly as well but in a different way than the butter. If that means changing the butter up, so be it. I'm just going to try and think about it more before doing anything further with it.
Thanks for the critique though, I appreciate it. I'm having a lot of fun trying to find different ways of doing the same mundane thing (serving toast) haha.
Its kind of keeping me sane as this is my last quarter here in San Francisco.
I can't afford to stay here anymore and my roommates are all leaving so I'm heading back down to LA to finish school down there. I'm not excited about moving down there because I've built a lot of friends and a new life up here in San Fran. I love it here, but yeah... its time to go I suppose. I'll make sure to stop by one of your classes and see you before I go though mate.
Anyways, cheers.

Made some changes based off of all the suggestions I got. So now there is a top loaded butter stick clip as well as a screw in jam jar at the bottom. I think the silhouette looks SOOOOOO much better. It looks like a real weapon now :|
Frankly, I LOVE IT! :D
Ps: special thanks to my girlfriend Svetlana for the translations :)
Throw your name and email up there homeboy. I hope I don't have to mail you the slapchop if you win, when are you leaving? Contest wraps June 15th...
James
06-01-2009, 01:24 AM
Oh yeah, sorry about that. I knew I forgot something xD
I'm not moving till the 20th! I get to finish out the quarter so I'll still be around :D
Here's an update with the email which is my name anyways so Its sort of both in one.
wait a minute, are those renders? Just turn on high quality lighting and throw a light in there with cast shadows checked. It will look way more realtime like...
James
06-01-2009, 02:25 PM
Okay fixed, this is all realtime in the maya viewport :D
thats a lot better, curious to examine your textures sans lighting, since this isn't normal mapped.
Also, show your texture flats and a wireframe in final presentation...
James
06-01-2009, 07:59 PM
Okay heres an updated version with a ton of extra stuff :D
Thats a lot better, but rendering out your images are softening your textures and the lighting is making this look worse instead of better. Just viewport grab with lights turned off...
James
06-02-2009, 02:58 PM
okay these ones are no lighting straight from viewport, I think it does look a lot better, thanks Dabu

that's all I can say
Good show

Jam on it!
(BTW I got this rig off highend 3D because I dont have a character thats rigged that fit this gun good enough)
James

This is too much fun xD. These are just cause I thought it would be funny :)

lol I would say you win simply for showing the gun in action
Haha who knew toast could be so EPIC?!?!!

06-08-2009, 07:26 AM
lmao, this made me think of some kids tv commercial. Like all the kids run in and the mom totally blasts them with some pb&j sandwiches. Then the kids make some corny face and it has some really intense commentary about how how insane the product is.
instant classic.
James
06-08-2009, 08:34 AM
haha thanks for all the comments guys xD
Yeah thats what I was thinking of too! Like the kids come running downstairs all ready for breakfast and whatnot. Then the mom is like
"Go Long!"
KA-DOOSH!
*toast pegs kid in the face*
*kid gives awkward look at the camera distraught between being sad and being happy*
"All part of a balanced breakfast!"
dude, excellent show! That takes it to the next level.
Some steep competition. Create a branding logo for it!
:)

Which one? The one with my logo or the hammer and sickle? haha

I think "тостер винтовка" is a more proper name, otherwise, great stuff!
R u Russian? Just curious

actually no I'm not, my girlfriend is Ukrainian (born in Kiev) and after spending so much time with her family who ALL speak russian (only her parents speak english but her grandparents not at all) Ive been on this like soviet binge as a joke. Apparently she showed her family the toaster rifle and they thought it was funny, I'm just glad they didnt try and cut my head off :| haha
They always say "never mess with russians or ukrainians or you might have an "unfortunate accident"" to me as a joke. So I say "Dont forget that "unfortunate accidents" were started by us Italians" haha.
