figured i would start us out with a few silhouettes i came up with. I want to do a flamethrower but that may change depending on how creative im feeling. Ive started by coming up with some interesting silhouettes. I will try to do 10 more then refine the one i like the best by coming up with 10 detail passes on its silhouette. Right now there is an assortment of high and low tech flamethrowers. any feedback is welcome.

I like one of the top right.
Looks so conservative :D
Did you have a character in your mind already when you're doing some sketch?
You should do 2 on a character... one connected to a backpack, and in his offhand perhaps the pistol version. It'd be sweet to see a completely pyro'd out character... sort of like a firebat.

for the sake of simplicity i will do just the weapon in question, maybe a pistol one too, then later id do a character, but will prob work on portfolio stuffs first.
remember, "Questionable Practicality"
Having to lug around a propane tank is a good direction to start, maybe using a weber grill as the delivery method...

thanks for the reminder, i have to force myself to think impractically, not something Im used too. I like the propane tank but its pretty mundane i may try to come up with some rigged ass thing with a water bottle for a tank, and maybe a lighter or a something for the ignition system. Lol a bag pipe would make a good flamethrower, that is prob too practical.

concept two. This one is a modified bagpipe. The user corks the ends of the bagpipe so to limit its flow to just the "canter" or main nozzle. Then the user takes a swig from the bottle and blows it into the bagpipe, by playing the bagpipe in the usual way the user can control the intensity of the flame, and also make a horrible annoying sound. Hence the name "banshee". Also there is some hand grenades on it instead of sissy tassels. oh yeah and the ignition is a candle that is clamped in to the end, so you have to keep on sliding it up as it burns down and it constantly goes out.
The main problem with this weapon is it requires a constant supply of Scotch whiskey to play leaving the user drunk after a short battle, on the plus side the user is drunk after a short battle.
might go with this one not sure.

Dude, you have to do the Bagpipe flamethrower. There's no contest with that. Its hilarious AND impractical. It's Epic.

yeah Im gonna have to start this today maybe, have been working on some stuff for my folio since Im applying for jobs this summer, but this may actually be a good portfolio piece if i can pull it off. I should prob be able to get this modeled and sculpted today.

hmm never seen that movie, sounds right though bond films are ridiculous.
okay i looked it up you are right it is in that movie, however that one is just a flamethrower disguised as a bagpipe the guy never actually blows into it. Pretty funny though.
keep pushing this concept, Ryan. I want to see you think outside the ol box there...

I'm not really sure how much more i can push this concept wise, but design wise i definitely have lots of room to work. I'm debating materials, like was it made from a real bagpipe aka skin bag or was it rigged up from an old inner tube or something. For the canter and the drones i am trying to figure out something original like making them combination of assorted found objects, like soda bottles rubber bands rusty pipes. I had considered having the bottle attached to one of the drones "upward pipes" but i thought i was funnier if the user had to swig the bottle frequently. Maybe ill have it all bound together with surgical tubing and duct tape. I mean the sack could be like a bag that goes around crown royal or maybe a chicken or some other unlucky animal. like a snake with the mouth as the canter and then tied off halfway back to make the bag. I mean if i was really gross id make it so you had to fart into the bag through one of the drones, but this isn't bevis and butthead.
If any1 had any cool ideas just shoot them my way.
I was thinking of some ways to customize this and push the design. You could make it look kinda makeshift. If you think about it, a bagpipe flamethrower would either be something you'd see on a villain from Batman or something some crazy scottish guy made in his basement. So maybe make the actual bag out of that disgusting 1950's yellow vacuum-bag stuff. The pipes could be a series of metal tubes, flutes or recorders just jammed into place and held together with glue or nails or duct tape. The lighter could be just as jammed in, maybe one of those crazy zippo's attached to a 9 volt battery pack. Anything you'd find around the house would be great to implement. Maybe put one of those 'If it aint Scottish, it's CRAP' bumper stickers somewhere along the bag. Anything as long as the result is... 'What the... is that a bagpipe? Is that a flamethrower bagpipe?!'

im probably going to have to withdraw from this contest, its not that i don't want to make this, i just have 0 dollars and desperately need to make some money so that is going to be taking up most of my time, however i will still make this because it just sounds fun.
