Extrude Manipulator Issue

I have this issue where after I extrude the movement manipulator and the resize manipulator are the exact same size, which makes it impossible to reliably use one or the other (i.e. trying to resize will force me to move and vice versa).

You can see what I'm talking about in the attached image. How do I change this setting? It's driving me nuts!

use the plus and minus keys to adjust the size of the manipulator. That should do it for you.
