color scheme and balancing is great in this one. i'm guessing the black & white one is for a grayscale print? it'd be cool to still see the light "cone" on the b&w one. the colors also seem to fit the air of the story.
yea, the black and white is for faxes and other media that are only black ink. maybe I could add in some subtle lines to suggest the light cone.
Thanks, we plan on doing many books that focus on US foreign policy and other socio political issues.

I would move the figure lil bit to the left, so there is more room for him to look into and shine his light.

These do look good, a lot better than the initial color schemes i saw. While i personally feel this is an overused style i do think it is very appropriate for print media and will have a lot of lasting power, and will be easily recognizable. I like the simplicity of it, but when you posted the reference images a while back i was blown away by the great use of patterns in the reference. If you where ever going to do a "special edition" logo i would try to incorporate some of that, crazy mixed media litho style from the inspiration. Im sure the theme will lend itself to an endless number of stories. Cant wait to see this floating around somewhere, and i hope these projects go very well.

Very solid, simple logos, I like them. I do think a little line gradient on the black-and-white one would make a huge difference in the readability and consistency with the colored copy, though.
And I didn't know most of what that video talked about. Very interesting (and/or nauseating), thanks for sharing...

I'm slightly reminded of this. Maybe its the name, or the collar, either way, I'm gonna start keeping a closer eye on my kids when you or your shifty website are around

on the splash screen for cognitocomics.com I love the worn edges applied really makes it much more interesting, and the banner is cool too, but the leather texture, blah it looks so out of place. i would try the same thing with a fibers texture or something like it was printed on a rougher paper or a linen, but the leather is just sorta cheezy. Thats just my opinion though, but the splash screen is still my fav version of the logo by far.
its supposed to look like cracked paint, but I ran out of time.
If you want to take a stab at it, Ill toss ya the psd.

so i did a quick cracked paint effect to the main part of the logo and broke it up to be adjusted separately for each level of tone in the main logo. Ill play with some more looks and then paint the masked so things layer right. Im debating if i should continue the cracking paint onto the banners or if i should make that transition from worn and torn at the center to a little newer on the outside.
i while i was at it i made a normal map, because i like to make normals of everything just to see what results i get. then i slapped a quick light on and did a screen grab. fun stuff.
edit added one where i mixed in the render to give some slight shading.

So, u doing a book based on a story of 30 years ago? If yes, then why not do something current? This kind of shit is going on today on a daily basis. If you are doing modern stuff, then disregard

I feel like the head light should break the border. Also, if you are going to use the cracked paint effect I would say only use it on the BG (tan area) and not washed over on the whole logo. Or be more subtle with it. Have the border cracking away in areas but don't go overboard with it.

If I may suggest:
try only using the crackle effect on the reds (ie, flags, miner logo, etc). As it stands, the tans/yellow appear as background/unpainted, so the reds appear as a layer on top of that. If you are going for an old painting effect, then chip some of the yellows away in areas all around the board, showing the base "material" underneath. Then have some crackle on the reds, including areas where that's chipped off completely as well. Otherwise it looks too much like an overlay of a tiled texture map on top of a finished illustration.
