Howdy, this is Paul from the Game Assets class with Dabu on Tuesdays from 1 - 5.
I mentioned that I am an indy game designer in class today and I thought I would use this opportunity to show off some of my work, which can be seen in its entirety at http://phubans.com/ All of the concepts, graphics, and scripting in these games is entirely my own work.
First up is MADHOUSE, a comic-horror shooter that I worked on in Game Maker for about 3 full years. It caught the attention of a local start-up who was interested in making it into a DS game, but fell by the wayside when he noticed another one of my games.

As you can see it's a retro-stylized top-down shooter that many people say reminds them of "Zombies Ate My Neighbors" but I've probably pulled the most influence from games like the original Zelda, 007, and a little-known Famicom (NES) game called Splatterhouse: Wanpaku Graffiti. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Splatterhouse:_Wanpaku_Graffiti) I'm currently trying to get help with turning it into an online versus game.
Next up is Love UP!, a "philosophical platform-shooter" where instead of shooting bullets to defeat your enemies you use love :) There's some interesting and unique features in this game, such as the "environmental shift mechanic" that changes the world around you as your "love meter" changes. This was actually the game that studio guy liked more than Madhouse... But since I plan on using this game to culture-jam and mock corporations, I don't think I would be able to get away with everything I wanted to do if it weren't an indy title ;)

Madhouse and Love Up are probably my two most developed games so far, but I have several other projects that didn't make it so far but I may like to revisit some day. Notably, Sword of Legends, which was a project I started with my friend Dead_Heat who lives in Australia and recently received some acclaim for his retro platform-shooter, Mission Extreme. Sword of Legends was to be a platform-adventure-RPG with emphasis on exploration, much like a Castlevania or Metroid game, but with the theme set in medieval fantasy. I was doing all the sprites and animations and Dead_Heat was programming the game in Game Maker. We actually made a sweet little tech demo but unfortunately the project fell by the wayside when I went without a computer for 6 months.
So I think I've gone on for long enough... If you're interested in playing or seeing more of these games, be sure to check out my website and drop me some feedback/critique here :)
Thanks!
