LOL im liking "the incredible funk" you should run a bit more with that idea. Bigger boom box and bigger medallion, maybe a flattop. cool idea, that would really make a great character for some game, like a fighting game, or basketball game.

01-02-2009, 04:03 AM
haha a fresh prince type flat top sounds cool and the over all exaggeration of the features sound like a cool idea. recently ive just been messing around with artrage doing to same ol. ill post some in the upcoming horas.

been away gathering inspiration from games and all that. i need to look up more accessories. im going to reformat this thing though. i've been doodling on printer paper, i should scan some but here is a face. i need to get away from doing the usual. k no more faces for a while.

the 7th i made a random drawing. a transitional one. im messing around with painter on my laptop. its a weird character. trying to figure out metal.
rburke
01-08-2009, 09:22 AM
Cool shape, form what i can see it has 2 arms, i would drop one arm the left one, well its right one. that would be sorta cool then exaggerate the remaining arm. the massive body thing is sweet and the character could really be built around that. Reminds me of heavily mutated dudes you see in a lot of games, except it looks mechanical/bioloigcal, sorta like sorta like a mecha/mutant hybrid. I'm thinking evangelian. keep up the good work.

im gonna get to the incredible funk and bodyfacegreenguy in painter later.i decided to practice hands and a foot. and a turkey... no idea, got bored and traced my hand. lolol.

quick question
do you prefer Painter over PS, or not sure yet.
graduisc
01-12-2009, 09:40 AM
im fine with whatever. i haven't really tried texturing stuff with painter, i do my more traditional stuff in it whereas in photoshop i try to employ that really digital art workflow or whatever. i also doodle around in some java paintchat thing on some weirdo site called artgrounds.

i have a few drawings on my laptop. ill get to those eventually. due to my weirdass insomnia ive decided to knock out a drawing of something i dont normally do. i drew a sad looking dog. i used a little bit of reference and an old school program too. open canvas .

good drawing there. i like the background colors. IT would be even better if you gave more of sense of light direction, i can see you tend not to use much shadow but i think in this case it could add to your work. Also you ever consider taking your simple brush and roughening the edges then recapturing the brush. The simple brushes are great for laying out colors and value but i feel for a painting its nicer to use a bit "dirtier" brush. Its not that it looks bad as is just that you can always sort of see the simple brush when its used. a brush with rougher edges will add texture to the piece. I have some wonderful tutorials on making custom brushes for painting in PS, i can try to dig them up if you like.

thanks man. and thanks for the input once again. yeah the dirty brushes sound cool. I have a few myself. I didn't use photoshop or painter this time around :\ i used Open Canvas, the old school collaborative drawing thing. the brush shapes are limited, and really its not a big step up from microsoft paint in some ways. i didnt really spend that much time on the dog thing but i agree i could use more direction of light to give more depth and character to my drawinzz. im just impatient sometimes. haha
rburke
01-23-2009, 10:32 AM
yeah im impatient too, i find myself jumping back and forth from one project to another, or ill start out very methodically then after a few hours into a painting ill start to rush myself.

k something new to help me get over my vacation addiction poisoning. This time i was trying to keep the focus on her torso/ face area as opposed to the same amount of attention given to every piece of her. I used some reference for her pose then the rest of it was experimentation.

cool i like it, The toga meets unreal tourney. Overall very soft i think that you should mix in a bit more hard edges, especially where you want things to stand out, as now its a bit blurry. but cool character well thought out armor pieces. nice hair too.

Z-brush is good enough. I have experiance in both of them and I personally think Z-brush is the better program, even though mudbox can handle more overhead (at least until Z-brush 4 gets released either this year or next.)
In the end they pretty much do the same thing, and once you get used to Z-brush's interface, its much more smoother to work with.
So how did you make the anatomy sculpt? did you start with a base model provided by the program? or is this your own original model?

i just used the canned based model. Then I went with whatever I could remember.

I want to leave a general comment.
I see that you are painting lots of textures like cloth, plastic, metal, skin, hair, but in the images they all look the same.
Making the image flat.
Drawing and painting from life trains the eye to memorize how the light hits and reacts to different textures.
Try spending more time on life painting, even though character development is fun.
Adding too much dark shadows and highlights everywhere will break the form.
Try stylizing the image, be selective with dark shadows and highlights, and place them only in important areas.
Hope this helps.

sounds good. alright. I'm going to start adding more focus to my little sketches and try changing the look of the materials because they also help with texture painting and all that, most of all I need to just start painting things around the house to get my eye tuned into that kinda thing.

thanks for the suggestion! which dude sketches? ill figure something out.
i wanted to take a break from art for a little, but i had to accept its part of my life. I had a bad habit of not saving the doodles i made during the bloodline meetings. i want to draw though so i will be looking at stuff around the house... and recently i wanted to draw with charcoal pencils wtf?

3 days already? well i tried someone else style during an Open Canvas session. look up lazymills1986 on deviant art. that person has an interesting style. i drew something from that persons sketchbook. very quick sketch but it looks cool to me. i tried coloring it but that turned out disastrous.
also here are somethings ive worked on during the past semester.

i like the ninja, and thats a very cool mask on him. You should name him though "ninja" is sort of boring.
Nice Start with the presentations. I would avoid having the title overrun your character models, you want to see them uninterupted...

those Pillsbury dough boy things are creepy cute, lol odd combo, they would work well as a group of hero tormentors who hide in the trees and bushes and behind rocks. As for the zbrush thing stick with it its has a steep learning curve but with the new improvements coming will be the better app, especially since you seem more familiar with traditional art.
