I have heard some people on the board talking about looking at texture maps from commercial computer games. How does one do this?

depends on the game. the texture files are usually embedded in other larger files.

for example, doom and quake used .pak files to store textures. there was a pak veiwer that could open them and browse the textures...

try googling around, or asking on polycount...

get the unreal tournament 3 game and it comes with the editor and you can view textures, poly's objects etc..

Its a good way to learn how the pros make them textures and models

Yes there is a tool for most games that can be used to extract models and textures some games are just easier than others. Most recently ive been doing small re-tex work in fallout 3. you get a great chance to look at others work and can see what corners they cut and how they managed to unify all the assets. Also you get to see some really awful texture work if you look around enough which always makes you feel better about your own.

Could you post some screenshots of the textures from FO3 in the inspiration thread? Twould be awesome to see their stuff, especially current gen assets...
